da Vinci® Robotic Surgery

Dr. A. Enrique Whittwell and his highly experienced surgical team offer cutting-edge technologies to assist in making your surgery as smooth and effective as possible with a short recovery time. That’s why our practice is pleased to offer da Vinci® robotic surgery, where Dr. Whittwell uses small tools attached to a robotic arm to assist in the surgery, helping him perform delicate procedures with optimal precision.

While minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery is effective for many routine abdominal and gastrointestinal procedures, the rigid surgical instruments can make delicate or complex operations more difficult to perform. For patients requiring more complex abdominal or gastrointestinal surgery, robotic surgery using the da Vinci® System is a safer, more effective minimally invasive option. Dr. Whittwell uses robotic technology to perform the following procedures:

  • Gallbladder removal
  • Colon surgery
  • Liver, spleen, and pancreas surgery
  • Gastrointestinal (GI) tract surgery, including esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines
  • Surgery for treatment of GERD and hiatal hernia
  • Bariatric surgery
  • Removing cancer tissue from around blood vessels, nerves, and some body organs

Robotic surgery is similar to laparoscopic surgery in that the surgery can be performed with smaller incisions than in a traditional open surgery. A thin tube with a camera attached to the end, called an endoscope, is placed through the incision, allowing the surgeon to easily see 3-D images of your body during the surgery. Dr. Whittwell is in complete control of the robotic arm at all times. The da Vinci® System allows him to function with greater dexterity and to make precise movements during the surgery.

Since the incisions made during robotic surgery are smaller than with traditional open surgery, the benefits of robotic surgery include:

  • Less pain and bleeding
  • Lower risk of infection
  • Shorter time in hospital
  • Less scarring
  • Quicker recovery time
